"TYO Reach gateway unavailable" — connected but no internet

The tray says Proxy: ON, but every routed page either shows TYO Reach gateway unavailable, data limit reached, or spins until it times out. Sites you haven't routed still work.

What it means

Reach is running and your browser is reaching the local proxy, but the proxy can't get a working tunnel to a gateway for your account. That's one of three things: the gateway can't be reached from your network, your account isn't being accepted (session stale or plan lapsed), or you're at your data cap.

Reach never falls back to sending routed traffic out on your own IP — it shows an error page instead. So "no internet" here really means "no gateway".

Fixes, in order

  1. Read the page. Data limit reached means your allowance is used up — top up or upgrade, then click I've topped up — retry now in the tray. Details in Data limits and limited mode. Everything below is for gateway unavailable or pages that just hang.
  2. Try another region. Tray → Gateway → pick a different region. Reach normally fails over by itself when a gateway stops answering (you'd see a Gateway switched notification), but a manual pick rules out a single bad path. See Gateway regions.
  3. Change connection mode. Tray → Connection modeDisguise, then Slow. Hotel, campus and some mobile networks block the default transport; Disguise gets through most of them. See Connection modes.
  4. Sign out and back in. From the tray, sign out, then Sign in to TYO Reach again. This re-issues your account key; a key the gateway no longer accepts (after a plan change, offboarding from a team, or a long-idle session) produces exactly this symptom.
  5. Check your plan. On the dashboard confirm the subscription is active, and for teams that you're still a member of the group.
  6. Check the network itself. Captive portals (hotel Wi-Fi) must be completed with Reach off or in a direct browser first; corporate networks may block outbound WebSockets entirely — mobile data is the quickest test.
  7. Update the client. Older versions can be missing a transport the gateways now expect; check the version line in the tray and update from the download page.

Common questions

Does Reach silently use my real IP when the gateway is down?

No. Routed traffic gets the gateway unavailable page; nothing leaks out direct. Switch Reach off if you need to browse without it.

Non-routed sites work, routed ones don't — is that expected?

Yes. Only routed traffic depends on the gateway. It's actually a useful sign: your internet is fine, it's the gateway path that needs fixing.

I paid and it still shows the limit page

The gateway caches your limit for up to about 15 minutes. Click I've topped up — retry now again after a minute.
